Study shows the importance of 'Social Competency' of Children

At Baxter's Corner, we are dedicated to improving what we call Social Literacy, what others have termed Social Competency. Results of a 19-year study of kindergartners show the importance of social skills, both in academic and overall success in life. "Pro-social behavior matters, even at a young age. And because it can be learned, it's a great target for prevention or intervention efforts." Researchers asked kindergarten teachers to evaluate their young students using a "Social Competency Scale," by rating stating abouts their behavior and interpersonal skills. Young Illustrator Camp Scheduled

Baxter's Corner will lead a new camp this year over spring break at Cabbage Patch Settlement House. Based on interest in the storytelling camps from past summers, Baxter's Corner and Cabbage Patch have developed a new camp intended to take children further into the publication process. At the spring camp, youth will learn the process of preparing illustrations for print, from determining which scenes to illustrate, to producing final artwork through the stages of concept, sketching, and color layering.  Campers will be producing illustrations based on the book THE CATASTEROUS CRUISE, which was written by campers at the 2015 Young...

Linda Baker of Baxter's Corner and Cabbage Patch Settlement House's Mayghin Levine join hosts Rachel Platt and Terry Meiners on Great Day Live Thursday, February 25, 2016, to tell WHAS11 viewers about GOING BANANAS IN SPACE. GOING BANANAS IN SPACE is a story written by 11 youth at one of Cabbage Patch's Young Storyteller camps. The story was initially presented as a booklet to campers with a few copies for Patch staff and board members. New Book Marks Launch of Youth-Authored Series

This month marks the release of a new children’s book, Going Bananas in Space, co-authored by 10 Louisville youth. The book is the first in a youth-authored series designed to showcase young talent while generating funds for a not-for-profit organization that serves at-risk youth. Louisville-based Baxter’s Corner teamed up with The Cabbage Patch Settlement House to lead a week-long day-camp for young storytellers, ages 8 to 13 years.
