Cabbage Patch Campers Go Bananas at Launch Party

Community Involvement

Baxter's Corner and Cabbage Patch Settlement House hosted a launch party to celebrate the completion of GOING BANANAS IN SPACE, a story written by 11 youth at the Patch’s Young Storyteller Camp this week.

The youth collaborated on the story and provided illustrations. From the history of storytelling to the elements of a good story, the campers explored plot and character development, scene details, word choice and editing.

Local illustrator, Mary Ellen Stottmann (Chief Crayon) and author, Linda Baker (Chief Pencil), co-owners of Baxter’s Corner, led daily workshop sessions, assisted the young storytellers/illustrators, and coordinated printing of a 40-page booklet that contains the main story and additional poems by the campers.

"We were delighted to part of the camp," said Mrs. Stottmann. "The values and social skills that we promote through our stories at Baxter's Corner closely align with those of Cabbage Patch, so it was a great partnership."
