"Oakley in Knots" - Story About Respect
by L.S.V. Baker
Building Character is Child's Play
“Oakley had eight hands. He did not know which to use.
When shaking hands with new friends, which hand should he choose?”
Oakley in Knots is a funny, rhyming story about respect which focuses on kindness and manners. Baxter’s Corner character Oakley the octopus knows it is polite to shake hands when meeting new people, but which hand should an eight-handed octopus use? He worries himself into a knot as he considers his options. At first, his classmates laugh at his predicament. Then a special task reveals the advantages of his many arms.
At the end of the story, we give you the opportunity to speak to your value of respect and what you think is important for your child in their early learning years. Simply ask the questions and complete the activities using the back of the book, and you will be surprised where the conversations lead you.
Building Character is Child’s Play®
Our books are designed to enhance speaking and listening skills though activities and conversations centered on values. Each Baxter’s Corner story contains a magical message for a child to learn. They are referenced in the back pages of each book; we call this our GoBeyond section. Children are motivated to make positive behavior choices as they begin to understand how their actions affect themselves and others. This begins to build responsibility and accountability.
Children’s Books – 3 months - 8 Years
“As an educator for 40 years, I appreciate the Go Beyond feature at the end of each story. With the activities in this section, parents, grandparents and educators can turn story time into opportunities for lessons about the impact of the choices we make.”
